The Legend says that Tapas were introduced by the King of Spain hundreds of years ago to combat drunken behavior. Thirsty workers were drinking beer and wine on empty stomachs before returning to their jobs, so the King ordered all glasses of beer or wine to be served with a small ‘tapa’ or plate on top with a small snack on it. Tapa comes from “tapar” which means cover in Spanish. So the glass was covered with a small plate of food. The “Tapa” was born!
The idea was that for every drink they bought they would eat a small ‘tapa’ as well.
The idea caught on quickly, with bars competing with each other to serve the best ‘tapas’ and therefore get the most customers. Soon hungry customers were demanding more food and the idea of ‘Tapas Bar’ was born.
